🏝️ 2. Elafonissi Beach – Crete

Why It’s Famous
There is more to Elafonissi than a typical beach. It is a lagoon with an almost surreal quality, where the water is as clear as glass and the sand has a gentle pink hue. That particular shade is put there by the seashells that have been ground down over time.
What to Expect
- For those with children in tow, it is hard to beat: the lagoon is shallow and safe for wading.
- It is also a designated Natura 2000 site, home to some uncommon flora and the occasional sea turtle making a nest.
- And if one is so inclined, a short walk through about a foot of water will put you on the little island out in front.
How to Get There
From Chania, it’s about 75 km (1.5–2 hours by car). Roads are winding but scenic. Public buses run in summer, but a rental car offers more flexibility.

How to Get There
Getting there from Lefkada Town is a 45-kilometre drive, or roughly an hour and a half. The last part of the road is a bit of a winding one, but there is room to park up on the cliff side.

- The water is an intense shade of blue that is hard to believe when you are there.
- Down on the beach is a good expanse of white pebbles for some sun.
- And if one is in the mood for a swim or some snorkelling, the conditions are as good as it gets.
